Students' Day in Ukraine: holiday history

The international day of students is celebrated on November 17, and on January 25 Students' Day is celebrated in Ukraine.
The holiday is associated with youth, romanticism and fun, and here its history which began in Czechoslovakia during World War II is connected with tragic events.

History
On October 28, 1939 in Czechoslovakia occupied by fascists, the Prague students and their teachers staged a demonstration to celebrate anniversary of formation of the Czechoslovak state (on October 28, 1918). Divisions of invaders dispersed demonstration, at the same time the student of medical faculty Jan Opletal was shot

Jan Opletal's funeral again developed on November 15, 1939 into a protest action. Dozens of protesters were arrested. On November 17 Gestapo men and SS-men surrounded dormitories early in the morning. More than 1200 students were arrested and imprisoned in a concentration camp in Zaksenkhauzen. Nine students and activists of the student's movement were executed without court in torture chambers of prison in the Prague district Ruzin. By order of Hitler all Czech higher educational institutions were closed until the end of war. In honor of these events on the World congress of students the International day of students was also determined. Today it is celebrated in many countries of the world. Ukraine began to note on November 17 as Students' Day since 1999 according to the decree of the president.

So in Ukraine celebrate two Students' Day — coinciding with International (on November 17) and the Tatiana Day, day of the great martyr Tatiana, Saint patroness of all students (on January 25). It is very convenient, one Students' Day is celebrated on the eve of the session, and another — after its termination. The celebration of Students' Day is held with assistance of the Ministry of Ukraine for a family, youth and sport, with assistance of the Cabinet of Ukraine and Committee on questions of science and education of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and includes a number of educational, public and cultural and art actions for youth and with its participation.
